SDS Empowers Students Through Global Media Workshop

Sunway Diploma Studies Department of Communication (SDS DCOM) remains committed to providing the best learning experiences for its students by organising meaningful, industry-relevant programmes that enhance both academic and practical skills. In line with this commitment, an engaging and insightful workshop titled “Understanding Global Media in the Digital Age” was recently conducted in collaboration with Middlesex University, bringing together approximately 80 students and four lecturers for an enriching and dynamic learning experience.

Held in a well-equipped lecture theatre that provided a comfortable and conducive learning environment, the session successfully combined theoretical understanding with hands-on practice. Students were actively involved throughout the workshop, demonstrating strong enthusiasm, creativity, and confidence in expressing their ideas.

The workshop was led by Dr Mita Lad, an experienced academic and media practitioner specialising in global media, digital culture, and communication studies. With extensive experience in teaching and research within the field of media and communications, Dr Mita Lad has been actively involved in exploring how digital platforms shape audience behaviour and global narratives. Her professional background and industry-relevant insights added significant value to the session.

Through her interactive teaching approach, Dr Mita Lad guided participants through key concepts related to global media, digital platforms, and audience engagement, while encouraging students to think critically and share their perspectives confidently.

One of the highlights of the session was an interactive pitching activity, where students were tasked with designing and presenting their best promotional poster for a Netflix movie or series. Working in teams, students brainstormed creative concepts, analysed target audiences, and developed visually compelling designs that reflected current global media trends.

This activity encouraged teamwork while strengthening students’ creative, critical thinking, and communication skills. Through pitching their ideas, participants gained valuable insight into how media content is developed, marketed, and consumed in the digital era.

Reflecting on the session, Dr Mita Lad shared “It was inspiring to see how enthusiastic and creative the students were. Their ability to analyse global media trends and translate them into strong visual concepts shows great potential for their future in the media industry.

Overall, the workshop served as a valuable platform for students to explore global media perspectives while developing essential industry skills. It reinforced the importance of adaptability, creativity, and critical thinking in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
